Canada has reached an agreement to support nearly C$70 billion (US$50.5 billion) in new hydroelectric and wind energy projects, marking a major investment in the country’s clean electricity infrastructure and energy transition.
The agreement includes up to C$10 billion in federal financial support and investments for projects expected to generate approximately 14 GW of renewable power. The initiative brings together the federal government and the governments of Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador to advance large-scale clean energy development.
Key projects include upgrades to the Churchill Falls hydroelectric facility, a proposed 2.7 GW Gull Island hydroelectric project, approximately 2 GW of proposed onshore wind development in Labrador, and new transmission infrastructure to connect the projects to electricity markets.
The scale of the investment highlights the growing importance of reliable, low-carbon electricity as countries respond to rising energy demand while seeking to reduce emissions and strengthen energy security. Expanding renewable generation alongside transmission infrastructure can also improve grid resilience and support the wider electrification of the economy.
The development demonstrates the role that government-backed financing and intergovernmental cooperation can play in unlocking capital for large-scale clean energy infrastructure. By reducing investment barriers and supporting major generation and transmission projects, such initiatives can accelerate the development of lower-carbon electricity systems.
For businesses, increased access to reliable clean electricity could also support industrial decarbonization and enable greater electrification across sectors.
