Egypt Mobilizes $750 Million in Green Bond Finance to Advance Climate Strategy 2050

Egypt has secured approximately $750 million (EUR 688 million) in green bond financing through the Global Green Bond Initiative to support implementation of its National Climate Change Strategy 2050. The financing package, backed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), strengthens the country’s climate finance framework with a strong emphasis on adaptation and emissions reduction measures.

The green bond proceeds are expected to reduce up to 10 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions and deliver adaptation benefits to an estimated 8.3 million people across participating regions. Officials have framed the initiative as a key driver of long-term climate resilience and strategic financing infrastructure that enables innovative project deployment across sectors.

Alongside the bond mobilization, Egypt is progressing several complementary climate actions, including approval of new climate finance mechanisms—such as a $200 million Novastar Investment Fund and a $50 million equity allocation for climate technology investments. These instruments aim to attract private capital and expand the national climate investment pipeline, particularly in areas such as renewable energy and resilient infrastructure.

On the policy front, Egypt has nearly completed its third update to its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0), underscoring enhanced mitigation and adaptation commitments aligned with global expectations. The Ministry of Environment has also finalized the country’s first transparency report and fourth national communication, progressing transparency and data credibility ahead of submission to the UN climate secretariat. A digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system is under development with World Bank and German Development Cooperation support.

In diplomatic engagements, Egypt has intensified participation in global climate forums. Senior officials engaged at COP30 in Brazil and other ministerial climate action meetings, advocating for strengthened adaptation outcomes, finance access, technology transfer, and multilateral collaboration to support climate-vulnerable nations.

Collectively, these efforts situate Egypt as a rising climate finance hub in Africa and the Middle East, coupling significant green bond proceeds with governance reforms and strategic international partnerships to meet long-term climate resilience objectives.
