The European Union (EU) is set to significantly streamline its environmental legislation, encompassing industrial emissions, circular economy, and waste management. This major initiative, driven by the EU’s “Competitiveness Compass” roadmap, aims to reduce the administrative and reporting burdens for companies operating within or engaging with the EU market.
On July 22, 2025, the European Commission launched a “Call for Evidence” for a forthcoming “environmental omnibus proposal.” This follows previous simplification efforts, including the “Omnibus I” package in February 2025, which addressed sustainability reporting. The latest proposal outlines measures to rationalize reporting obligations under the Waste Framework Directive, harmonize Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements, and simplify environmental assessment permitting processes.
