GRI Advances Sector-Based Sustainability Reporting Through Its Sector Program

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is strengthening the quality and consistency of sustainability reporting through its Sector Program, an initiative designed to develop sector-specific GRI Standards that reflect the most significant economic, environmental, and social impacts across industries.

The Sector Program aims to improve transparency and comparability by identifying sector-relevant material topics and disclosures, helping organizations focus on what matters most for their industry. These sector standards are intended to be used alongside the GRI Universal Standards and Topic Standards, forming a complete and structured reporting framework.

GRI’s sector standards are developed through a transparent, multi-stakeholder due process, involving experts from business, civil society, labor, and investment communities. This approach ensures that sector impacts are assessed holistically and aligned with stakeholder expectations.

By providing a clear starting point for materiality assessments, the Sector Program supports organizations in producing more decision-useful, credible, and comparable sustainability disclosures. The initiative also helps regulators, investors, and other stakeholders better understand sector-level risks, impacts, and opportunities.

The GRI Sector Program reflects a broader shift toward impact-focused, sector-aligned ESG reporting, reinforcing GRI’s role in shaping global best practices for sustainability disclosure.
