ISO and GHG Protocol Partner to Unify Global Emissions Standards

In a landmark development set to transform the landscape of carbon accounting, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) have announced a new strategic partnership. This collaboration is designed to unify existing standards for greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement and reporting, addressing a long-standing challenge of fragmentation that has complicated climate action.

Until now, companies and policymakers have had to navigate a complex patchwork of different frameworks. This new partnership aims to provide a single, coherent global language for emissions accounting. By harmonizing their portfolios of GHG standards, ISO and GHG Protocol seek to simplify processes for companies, increase consistency for regulators, and reduce the overall reporting burden on all stakeholders.

The new agreement will merge the strengths of both organizations. It will combine the rigorous, internationally recognized ISO 1406X family of standards with the widely adopted GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting, Scope 2, and Scope 3 standards. This will result in a single, harmonized portfolio of co-branded international standards. Additionally, the organizations will work together on a joint product carbon footprint standard to meet the growing demand for more granular, value chain-level data.

This unified approach is expected to provide greater clarity and comparability for investors, enabling more informed capital allocation decisions. For companies, it means a more streamlined and efficient path to compliance. The move is also being watched closely by regulators worldwide, as it could set a de facto global standard for emissions reporting.

By combining forces, ISO and GHG Protocol are taking a significant step towards a more transparent and standardized global approach to emissions reporting, which is critical for accelerating climate action and building a more sustainable future.
