Ireland has officially launched a new national Circular Economy Strategy aimed at reducing emissions, cutting waste, and accelerating the country’s transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy. The strategy forms part of Ireland’s broader climate framework and aligns with its legally binding climate targets.
The plan focuses on moving away from the traditional “take-make-dispose” economic model toward a system that prioritizes reuse, repair, recycling, and sustainable product design. Key measures include reducing material consumption, improving waste management systems, strengthening producer responsibility schemes, and promoting circular business models across sectors such as construction, food, and manufacturing.
The government emphasized that circularity will play a critical role in lowering greenhouse gas emissions, conserving natural resources, and supporting green innovation. By embedding circular principles into public policy and procurement, Ireland aims to create economic opportunities while enhancing environmental resilience.
Officials noted that the strategy also supports Ireland’s commitments under EU climate legislation and its national Climate Action Plan. Implementation will involve collaboration between government departments, businesses, local authorities, and communities to ensure measurable progress.
The initiative signals Ireland’s strategic shift toward integrating resource efficiency and climate action—positioning circular economy policy as a core pillar of long-term sustainable growth.
