GRI Proposes New Pollution Disclosure Standards to Strengthen Environmental Transparency

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has released a set of proposed pollution disclosure standards aimed at enhancing corporate transparency around environmental impacts. The new draft standards are part of GRI’s broader effort to update and strengthen its reporting framework in line with evolving global sustainability expectations.

The proposed standards introduce more detailed and structured requirements for organizations to disclose their pollution-related impacts, covering areas such as air emissions, water discharges, soil contamination, and the management of hazardous substances. Companies will be expected to provide clearer data on the sources, scale, and mitigation of pollution across their operations and value chains.

GRI highlighted that the updates are designed to improve consistency and comparability in sustainability reporting, enabling stakeholders to better assess corporate environmental performance. The standards also align with growing regulatory and investor demand for high-quality, decision-useful ESG data.

A key focus of the proposal is to push companies beyond high-level disclosures toward more granular, impact-based reporting. This includes transparency around pollution prevention measures, control mechanisms, and progress toward reduction targets.

The draft standards are currently open for public consultation, allowing businesses, policymakers, and other stakeholders to provide feedback before finalization. Once implemented, these changes are expected to play a critical role in shaping how organizations report and manage pollution-related risks and impacts globally.
